Introduction

I first put a web page up back in 1995. Since then I have wanted to convert the site to frames and add some flashy graphics. It took a homework assignment (twice in fact) to finally get the thing running. Here is some insight into the site design.

Development

I used to write most of my HTML by hand with some custom scripts.   Now I use a combination of Microsoft FrontPage and Allaire's Home Site to do the job.   FrontPage helps in the visual design, site management, and link integrity department.   Home Site gives me all the fun of the raw, gritty HTML, with an excellent development environment to get things done fast.

In past versions of the page, I've tried to accommodate older browser users.  Now if my users don't have the proper browser, their warned through a JavaScript <NOSCRIPT> section on the first page.

The Picture Gallery is an area I'm exceptionally proud of.  I wrote most of the JavaScripts by hand to create an interactive slide show of different events that were captured with our digital camera.

Requirements for CIS 456

This page was completed as part of a homework assignment for CIS 456. Requirements for this assignment included a total of six HTML pages containing the following information:

  1. Bulleted items
  2. Numbered items
  3. Images (pictures)
  4. Headings
  5. Bold and Italic words
  6. Horizontal Rules
  7. E-mail links
  8. Color background or pattern
  9. Color Text
  10. HTML Tables
  11. Links to 5 other personally created documents
  12. A link to CIS456-HTML
  13. Personal information
  14. Last revision date (Month Day, Year)

The home-page (index.html) MUST include:

  1. Personal information
  2. E-mail link to yourself.
  3. Links to 5 other personally created documents

The five other pages you must create are

  1. Resume On-line.
  2. List of current courses for this semester.
  3. List of interesting or favorite places to go on the WWW.
  4. An insight into your interests, background, and outlook for your future career and personal accomplishments.
  5. YOU DECIDE (be creative!!!)

Because this is a new version of an old site, there were some additional requirements.   Those met include:

  1. Restructure your site with HTML frames (the old one had frames but this is a big improvement.)  The old site can be found at http://www.intac.com/~erc.
  2. Use at least on Java Applet. (Front Page News)
  3. JavaScript support (it's all over!)
  4. Support for browser sensing Meta-tags. (I used JavaScript to do it on the front page)
  5. A Background sound clip (you're listening to it now!)

Page Descriptions

It is difficult to explain every page on the site, but here are some highlights...

Home Area

This is the front page news section with some jump off points to other portal sites.   Some of my advertisers have larger sections of this page than the two swatches on the bottom.  A Java applet flashes some news.  The layout is facilitated through the use of tables.

Search Area

The search area is my small attempt in making a portal for myself.  My most used search engines are easily accessed from this point

Ed's Area

This area is officially my home page area on the site.  Here you can page me, check my schedule, send me e-mail, and check on my classes and projects.  Also included is my resume. It is so easy to give a head hunter a URL to your resume when you really don't want to bother with him.

Jenn's Area

Just like mine, but with information specific to my wife.

David's Area

Ditto, for my brother.

Pictures Area

The Photo Gallery area has the most improvement on the site.  The pages are 95% script generated and provide advanced features such as an automatic slide show.

Links Area

This are my links.  I'm working on migrating my bookmark files to the links page so I have them everywhere I go.  For now, it's just one big page with an index to the left that jumps using hash anchors.

Wedding Area

The original reason I purchased the cichone.com name and web space was to but up an information site for my wedding.  This is what was created for Jennifer's and my special day.

Partners

As I work with different customers, I find it useful to provide information to them on my web site.  This is a secure area for files and information pertaining to them.

Future

There is so much I wanted to add to the site, but there is always another day. Some of the things I would like to add include:

Commentary

This was a great assignment. It gave me an opportunity to work with the page again and explore aspects of frame. JavaScript and site design. I recommend that you keep it part of the class in the future.
